Indian railway's conventional toilets in railway coaches are of open discharge type i.e waste discharge directly on the tracks at stations and en route. To overcome this concern Indian Railway and Defense Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) jointly developed
Bio- Toilets for passenger coaches.
What is Bio Toilet and How it works ?

It is a toilet in which biological degradation of human waste by inoculums takes place. Inoculums digests the human waste converting it into water & gases in the process. Anaerobic Bacteria is used in bio toilets for degradation purpose.
Human waste enters into the Bio- Degradable tank through toilet seat. Flow of human waste from 1st and last chamber is passed through Piping arrangement. Bio- degradable tank consists of six chambers to provide sufficient time for growth of Bacteria in green grass pads. Throughout the chambers degradation process is carried out which convents human waste into methane and carbon dioxide as the end product. This end products are released into the atmosphere.

The flushed water is treated with chlorine in Chlorinator that is provided to disinfect the discharged water which reduces the Ecoli form present in effluent. Discharged effluent is harmless & comparable to river water.
Benefits of Bio-Toilets
- Better aesthetic look on rail track
- No fly nuisance around excreta
- Harmless discharged effluent
DO and DON'T
- Use dustbin provided in the toilet to dump waste.
- Flush after use and keep toilet clean.
- Do not throw bottle, tea cups, sanitary napkin, newspaper, polythene bags, gutka pouches etc. as this results in chocking of bio-toilets.
